Criteria 1 - Investigating the Design Context

The first section of the folder is all about analysing the design brief and researching relevant information.

AQA GCSE Specification for 2013/2014

This section is worth 8/90 marks.

It should be 4 to 5 pages long and take between 5 and 6 hours to complete.

To receive full marks the section should meet the following standards:

  • Discrimination shown when selecting and acquiring relevant research that will promote originality in designing.
"Is all of the research you have included useful? Does it help you make your designs new and original?"
  • Excellent understanding and analysis of the design context.
"Have you shown you understand the design brief and context? Have you used a mind map to show your initial thoughts on the project? Who, Where, When, Why, What and How? Aesthetics, Cost, Client, Environment, Size, Safety, Function, Materials / Manufacture?"
  • Detailed analysis of relevant existing products or systems undertaken related to design intentions.
"Have you looked at at least 4 products similar to what you want to design? Have you looked at them in detail using ACCESSFM? Have you given your own opinion on the products? What do you like about the products? What might you improve?"
  • Comprehensive analysis of relevant and focused research undertaken.
"Do all pages have an introduction and conclusion? What have you learned from the research on each page? Have you stated how it's going to be useful in your project?"
  • Clear and specific design criteria identified, reflecting the analysis undertaken.
"Have you written a detailed specification? Have you given reasons for each specification point linked to your research? Is each point justified using your research?"
  • Target market identified and the intended consumer/user profiled
"Do you have a Client / Consumer towards whom the project is aimed at? Have you found out their interests and preferences? Have you asked their opinions on the design brief? Have you created a questionnaire to give to the inteded target market? Have you analysed and concluded those results?"
